Vík í Mýrdal

September 14, 2025 -- Vík í Mýrdal (Vik) is the southernmost village in Iceland. It's about 110 miles southeast of Reykjavik. The black sand beaches were nearby, as were various other attractions. The prominent landmark in Vik is a church. It has a red roof and sits on a hill overlooking the village and black sand beaches. It was built in 1934 and is designated as a safe haven for the community, in the event of flooding. We couldn't go inside the church, as it was locked.

While planning the trip, Lara had found a restaurant in Vik that she wanted to eat at. They served interesting pizzas. We found the place and ate there. We had the Osta pizza, with Camembert, blue cheese, kastali, cheddar, and red currant jam. You dipped the pizza in the jam. It was delicious. Too bad we didn't order two of them. We had ordered a regular pizza in case we didn't like the one with jam.

The walls of the restaurant were a gallery of unique paintings by an Icelandic artist. They were quirky pictures of  Icelandic sheep. I would love to have bought one. The gallery was called KindArt, which means "female sheep" in Icelandic.
