Two spectacular waterfalls

September 14, 2025 -- Two spectacular waterfalls are located near each other on the South Coast of Iceland, not far off the Ring Road:  Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui  It was probably the most crowded place we went in Iceland. It was raining. Rather appropriate since we were going to get near the falls.  In fact, it was the first day we wore our rain/snow pants. Good thing.

Seljalandsfoss: One of Iceland's most visited waterfalls

Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland's most famous and visited waterfalls. The water drop is 197 feet.  The falls are part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in a volcano glacier. What makes Seljalandsfoss unique is that you can walk behind it. The trail was rocky and muddy in places, especially on a rainy day. Good shoes were a must.

Gljufrabui Waterfall was just a short walk from Seljalandsfoss, but was hidden.  Gljufrabui means “canyon dweller” in Icelandic. The name refers to the waterfall being partially hidden from view within a canyon. You have to walk through a gap to get to the falls. You have to step over some stones. I stepped in the water. Lara fell. Getting back to the falls was especially challenging because of the number of people.
