Urriðafoss and Ægissíðufoss Waterfalls

September 14, 2025 -- There are no shortages of waterfalls in Iceland. Many are conveniently located off the Ring Road. Urriðafoss is in the Þjórsá, the longest river in Iceland. With a height of 12 feet and a width of 750 feet, Urriðafoss is the most voluminous waterfall in the country and second highest in Europe. Plans to dam the river (to build a hydro-electric plant) would significantly reduce the water flow of the falls.

Urriðafoss is Icelandic for trout waterfall.

Most voluminous waterfall in Iceland

Ægissíðufoss is another picturesque waterfall in South Iceland. It is not particularly tall, but is 190 feet wide. It spans the river Ytri-Rangá. The spring-fed river eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean and is known for salmon fishing.
