September 2025 -- Nor sure how many miles we drove in Iceland, but we did plenty. Lara did almost all the driving. I did little more than an hour. We drove the Ring Road (Route 1) around the island. Gas was expensive, about $9 a gallon (ouch!). We had to fill up about a half dozen times. You had to pay for parking almost everywhere you stopped The only toll road was a tunnel, which I neglected to pay online, so I had to pay a fine when I returned the car. Ditto with a few parking areas. Traffic wasn't bad anywhere, even in Reykjavik. Driving is definitely the way to see Iceland.
The Ring Road (Route 1)
Most of the roads in Iceland are single lane; the Ring Road is. The only dual lane highways are near Reykjavik. We encountered some gravel roads, especially leading to attractions. Some single lane bridges. F roads are unpaved and require 4WD. They're mostly in the interior (highlands). Not many people go there. We unexpectedly ended up on an F road (a short cut) in East Iceland (Axarvegur). It was an interesting drive to say the least, through some awesome scenery. The road was riddled with potholes. We encountered rain and fog. While it was fun, I think Lara was glad to get off it.
Beautiful intersection: we headed East
