Skógafoss Waterfall

September 14, 2025 -- Skógafoss is a waterfall on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland. It is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country:  82 feet wide and a drop of 200 feet. A 527-step staircase leads up the slope to the top of the waterfall. We did know go up. In fact, we didn't spend too much time at this waterfall, due to time constraints.

According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The legend continues that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again.

Skógafoss means "Forest Waterfall" in Icelandic. The name comes from the thick forests that covered the area when it was named, though most of the forest has long since disappeared.
