September 14, 2025 -- Iceland has over 200 manmade caves. The caves were inhabited or used for livestock. Many have folklore associated with them. They were great subjects for picture-taking.
Rútshellir (Rútur’s Cave) is said to be the oldest extant man-made residence in Iceland. The cave is entered via a sheep shed which was built in front of it in the early 20th century.
Drangurinn caves are a series of caves within a giant rock formation in southern Iceland, historically used as sheep and cow sheds and linked to folklore about elves. The formation is called Drangurinn í Drangshlíð and is located at the foothills of the Eyjafjöll mountains.
