Dyrhólaey Peninsula

September 15, 2025 -- Dyrholaey  is a small peninsula on Iceland's South Coast. It is close to the town of Vik and the black sand beaches. It was formed by volcanic activity and used to be an island. It is the southern most point of Iceland.  The peninsula consisted of three attractions:  a lighthouse, a sea arch, and breathtaking views in all directions. The area has been used in various movies and TV shows, including Game of Thrones and Noah.

Dyrholaey’s most recognizable landmark is its massive rock arch, a result of centuries of erosion. When the sea is calm, ships can sail through it. Even small planes have been flown through it. It is 394 feet high and shaped like an arch. Not sure if you can walk out on it. We didn't see anyone.

Dyrhólaey lighthouse is a castle-shaped lighthouse located at the highest point of Dyrhólaey. It was established in 1912. The present lighthouse was built in 1927 and is still operational. The light flashes white every 10 seconds. Dyrhólaey is has the most light power of any lighthouse in Iceland.
