September 20, 2025 -- Kirkjufell Mountain and Waterfalls are among the most photographed places in Iceland. They are located near Grundarfjörður at the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The river Kirkjufellsá runs down from the volcano Helgrindur and has three waterfalls in it, all called Kirkjufellsfoss.

Mt. Kirkjufell is often called "Church Mountain" because of its resemblance to a church steeple. It is 1519 feet tall and contains volcanic rock, but is not a volcano. It is a nunatak, a mountain that protruded above the glaciers surrounding it during the Ice Age, and before that was part of what was once the area's strata.
