September 19, 2025 -- Kolugljúfur and Kolufoss are a Canyon (Kolugljúfur) and a Waterfalls (Kolufoss) in the north west of Iceland, not far off Road 1. The canyon (gorge) is approximately 1 kilometer long and 197 feet wide. The the gorge contains the river Víðidalsá which is renown for its salmon.
Bridge across gorge
Both the gorge and the falls - Kolufossar - are named after a giantess once said to live in the area, Kola. She was said to sit on a nearby ledge at night and grab the salmon travelling up the water by hand, before throwing them in a nearby hot spring to cook them.
