Headquarters for a Rebellion

June 10, 2023 -- The Kennedy Farm served as the headquarters for John Brown and his fellow abolitionists during their 1859 raid of the federal arsenal in Harper's Ferry. The National Historic Landmark is located a few miles north of Harper's Ferry (in Maryland). The buildings have been restored to their appearance at the time of the raid.

Although Brown's raid failed, it stirred up a lot of fear and controversy. Even today, John Brown is a polarizing figure. To the South (slave holders), he was a terrorist. To the North (abolitionists), he died a martyr.  He was hanged in Charlestown on December 2, 1859.
