Harper's Ferry, West Virginia

September 13, 2020 -- Mom and I have visited Harper's Ferry on several occasions. Robin lives not far. Harper's Ferry is a popular tourist destination. There are many places of historic interest. There are many recreational opportunities. It is a picturesque area at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers.

St. Peters Roman Catholic Church occupies a prominent location on the heights above Harper's Ferry. The original church was built in 1883. It survived the Civil War, but was extensively altered in 1896. The street along the side of the church is part of the Appalachian Trail. It is the church where Robin docents.

Jefferson Rock is a rock formation on the Appalachian Trail in Harpers Ferry. It consists of several large masses of shale, piled one upon the other, that overlook the Shenandoah River just prior to its confluence with the Potomac. The landmark derives its name from Thomas Jefferson who stood there on October 25, 1783. He found the view from the rock impressive.

The Hill Top House Hotel occupies a spectacular location, with panoramic views of the Potomac and Shenandoah valleys. The original hotel was built in 1888. It closed in 2008. Due to its prime location, its restoration has been mired in controversy.
