December 2018 -- I visited Red Rock Canyon because it was close to Las Vegas, only about 15 miles away. For this reason, it is a popular tourist destination. Red Rock Canyon is designated a National Recreation area. It consists mostly of large red rock formations. The protected area is 197,349 acres.
I drove the 1-way loop (13 miles). The scenery at Red Rock Canyon was not nearly as spectacular as the scenery in other parks, at least from a driving standpoint. Things can always be different when you hike. Not everything can be seen from the road or from short hikes.
