Michigan Sheep Industry

June 17, 2017 -- Michigan State University hosted the NCERA 214 meeting in 2017. After the meeting was over, we had the opportunity to participate in an industry tour. We visited the university farm, Richard E's farm, a feed lot, a packing plant, and a Halal butcher.

Wolverine Packing Company

Wolverine Packing Company is a major player in the US lamb industry, especially in the Eastern US. It started out as a small veal and lamb company, but is now a multi-faceted protein company. In addition to processing lambs (all Halal), Wolverine imports lamb and goat meat.

Hannewald Lamb Company

Hannewald Lamb Company operated a lamb feed lot. It was a state of the art facility with slatted floors.  All of the lambs had their necks sheared for religious (Halal/Kosher) slaughter.
