Hoover Dam

We visited Hoover Dam at the same time we visited the Grand Canyon.  While not natural like the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam creates a similar sense of awe:  human ingenuity vs. the timeless power of nature. At one time, Hoover Dam was the tallest dam in the world. It is considered one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.

A controversial name:  Hoover or Boulder Dam?

The name of the dam was controversial. Many people didn't like Hoover and blamed him for the depression. The alternative name was Boulder Dam. During WWII, the dam (whatever you called it) was the target of a German bombing plot. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the dam was closed for the rest of the war.

Created world's largest reservoir

Lake Mead is the reservoir formed by Hoover Dam. It is the largest reservoir in the US, providing water to 20 million people and large areas of farmland. When we visited in 1986, the water level was at historical highs, due to flooding in the early 1980's. In 2026, Lake Mead is at only 34% of its capacity. The low water level is the result of persistent droughts and low snow pack, along with increased demand for water. Climate change for sure. And, population growth.
