Little Round Top

November 17, 2024 -- Mom and I visit Gettysburg frequently.  For several years, Little Round Top was undergoing rehabilitation. We finally got to see it. Little Round Top was the scene of a crucial defensive battle on the second day of Gettysburg. The New York 12th and 44th regiments played a crucial role in the battle. The 44th held the center of the line while the 12th provided reinforcements.

The monument honoring the 12th and 44th New York Infantry Regiments stands at the summit of Little Round Top. It is a castle and the largest and most expensive monument of its kind on the Gettysburg Battlefield. It is 44 feet high and 12 feet wide and cost $11,000 to build (a lot of money for the time). The 91st Pennsylvania also played an important role in the battle. They strengthened the Union line after the initial assault. Their 25.5 foot tall monument also stands at the summit of Little Round Top.

A monument to General Gouverneur Kemble Warren stands on a large boulder at the summit of Little Round Top.  Warren was the Chief Engineer of the Army of the Potomac. He was one of the lesser known heroes of the Battle of Little Round Top.
