September 16, 2025 -- Axarvegur Road is a remote, unpaved mountain pass in eastern Iceland, formally Route 939. Its reputation stems from its steepness and gravelly surface (not to mention potholes), which make it challenging to drive, especially for those unfamiliar with Icelandic F-roads, but it also offers spectacular, isolated scenery and is a shortcut between East Iceland and the Ring Road. Our GPS directed us to this route, and oh, what a ride it was!
Along the route, we encountered Folaldafoss, a waterfall seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Dropping about 65 feet, it is fed by the Berufjardara river. There was a car park that offered a good view of the falls and surrounding barren landscape. We didn't have enough time to venture closer. Too bad.
