Dettifoss and Selfoss

September 17, 2025 -- Dettifoss is is reputed to be the second most powerful waterfall in Europe after the Rhine Falls. It is the second largest waterfall in Iceland in terms of volume discharge. The falls are 330 feet wide and have a drop of 144 feet down to the canyon Jökulsárgljúfur. Dettifoss   The sediment-rich runoff colors the water a greyish white. Dettifoss means falling or collapsing water.

It was snowing.

Selfoss is a smaller waterfall located just upriver from Dettifoss.  It is named for the seals that were historically seen in the river's path toward the sea. Selfoss is much wider than it is tall:  330 vs. 36 feet. You are able to get closer to Selfoss compared to Dettifoss.

Both waterfalls are located in in Vatnajökull National Park in northeast Iceland. Vatnajökull National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland and it is the largest.
