Thingvellir National Park

September 20, 2025 -- Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly meet and are pulling apart. Thingvellir is also famous for being the birthplace of Icelandic democracy and one of the oldest parliamentary sites in the world.

Through the gorge

Lake Thingvallavatn is the largest lake in Iceland. It lake lies along the North Atlantic Ridge, sitting where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates separate from each other. It is 32 square miles and is deepest at 377 feet.
