Tahquamenon Falls

October 19, 2025 -- Tahquamenon Falls State Park is home to Michigan's largest waterfall and one of the largest waterfalls in the eastern half of the US. Tahquamenon Falls drop 48 feet and span 200 feet across the Tahquamenon River. The water is brownish in color due to the tannins leached from the cedar swamps from which the river drains.

Tahquamenon rhymes with phenomenon

Brown water:  "Root beer" falls

The falls are divided into Upper and Lower Falls. The Lower Falls are 4 miles downstream. They consist of five smaller falls that fan around an island. The Upper Falls were definitely more spectacular.
