September 18, 2025 -- The hike to the top of Hverfjall, a volcanic crater that looks like a black cone, is considered moderate due to its steepness. Blowing snow and cold made it even more challenging. I think that was the coldest we were in Iceland. But we did it and it was worth it because we were rewarded with incredible views of the crater and surrounding area, though visibility (and picture-taking was limited a bit by the blowing snow.

Hverfjall Volcano and Crater
Hverfjall was formed in a volcanic eruption about 2,500 to 2,800 years ago. The distinctive circular shape was the result of a powerful explosion caused by magma interacting with groundwater.
