A few months ago, Oliver was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. It's highly unusual for a cat his age. He turned 4 in May. But he had all the classic symptoms, including weight loss and irritability. I had to tell the vet to test him, since Oliver fell outside the normal age range. The vet was surprised when Oliver's T4 number came back high. It wasn't real high, but it was still outside the normal range.
Oliver's been taking the pills (methimazole) for a couple of months now. He eats them in his food (most of the time). His T4 improved after the first few weeks. On his next visit, his T4 was too low, so the vet cut his medication in half. Oliver has gained some weight (finally). He looks and handles better (fleshier). His next check-up won't be for another six months, unless there's a reason. It will be curious to see what his number is then. I'm not sure if he'll need or I'll do the iodine treatment.
This video clip shows how content he is. He's definitely less irritable nowadays. Not as friendly and lovable as Cash, but much better than he was. His favorite thing to do is "nurse" me: knead my chest. Here he's "making biscuits" at the foot of the bed. All three of my pets were in the guest room with me when I took this video. My family!
