Not far from Cobh was Kindred Spirits, a large steel sculpture built to thank the Native American Choctaw people for their kindness and generosity during the Great Irish Famine. Despite suffering their own oppression, the Choctaw made a donation to Irish Famine Relief (in 1947). This created a bond between both peoples who continue to work together
The sculpture consists of nine 20-foot eagle feathers arranged in a circle. The feathers form a bowl shape to represent a gift of a bowl of food. Sometimes, the feathers are lit up at night or on special occasions. We were lucky. We got to see the feathers lit red.
The feather sculpture was unveiled and dedicated in 2017. A delegation from the Choctaw Nation was on-hand for the ceremony.
