We visited another castle. Who doesn't love castles? Cahir Castle is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles. Many TV shows and movies have been filmed at Cahir Castle, including Excalibur and the Tudors.
Cahir Castle is situated on a rocky island on a river. While it dates back to 1142, most of the existing castle was built in the 15th century. There are some later 18th century additions. Like many castles, it has seen many battles; however, it was considered to be one of the safest castles, taken by force only once in 1599. In 1650, the castle was surrendered to Oliver Cromwell during his conquest of Ireland. The last Lord Cahir died in 1961 and the castle become property of the state.

The first thing you encounter at Cahir Castle is the moat. There is water in it, and there are geese in it. They add to the charm of the castle. The geese are common farmyard domestic geese. They are part of a conservation effort.
