West Virginia Route 9 is a scenic drive that I/we have taken on several occasions. From Berkeley Springs to Paw Paw is especially picturesque, as it climbs through the Appalachian Ridges. Just west of Berkeley Springs, there is a pullover at Prospect Peak. Prospect Peak overlooks the Potomac and Great Cacapon Valleys and three states: West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It is pretty in any season.
The Cacapon Railroad Bridge is a historic, four-arch stone viaduct that carries freight trains over the Cacapon River near its confluence with the Potomac River. It was built in 1910. The original bridge was destroyed in 1862 by Confederate forces (under Stonewall Jackson).
On one of the drives, Mom and I stopped in Oldtown (Maryland) to eat. We ate at a restaurant that was located in an old high school cafeteria. In fact, several businesses were located in the old school which closed in 2000. What a great idea it is to use old schools for small businesses. Wish we'd make more use of old abandoned buildings (before they fall into disrepair).
