Sligo Abbey

September 20, 2023 -- Sligo Abbey (Mainistir Shligigh)) was a Dominican convent in Sligo, Ireland. It survives from medieval days and was built in 1252. It was accidentally burned down in 1414 and further damaged by rebellion in 1641. The abbey grounds were used as a cemetery. We explored the ruins of the abbey on our own.

Sligo Abbey has a connection to Dracula through the cholera epidemic of 1832. The abbey's graveyard became a burial site during the epidemic, and the stories of live burials within it. It is generally agreed that Stoker's Dracula was influenced by his mother's macabre account of the Sligo's cholera.

Sligo Abbey's last burials were long before the site was a ruin, and the grounds are now managed as a historic monument, not a cemetery.
