About 60 round barns remain in the US. They were popular in the US between 1880 and 1920. They were originally built by Shakers, a religious sect. Round barns have many advantages. The round shape is more stable in severe weather. The grain silo in the center made feeding easier. The wedge shaped pens were a better fit for cattle.
The round barn in Biglerville was built in 1914. At one time, it provided room for about 50 cows and 16 horses. Today it houses a farmers market with fresh produce, preserves, baked goods, and local crafts. The top of the barn is open for weddings and other events. There is a painted horse statue in front of the barn.
Across from the barn, there was an inflatable pool set up for "dog diving." For a moment, I wondered if Ty could do dog diving, to expend his energy. Then, I remembered he doesn't like to swim. He likes to play in the water. It was neat to watch, though.
