Gathland State Park

May 30, 2020 -- Gathland State Park was established in 1942. The park occupies the former estate of war correspondent George Alfred Townsend, who wrote under the pen name "Gath" during the Civil War. The park features the War Correspondents Memorial Arch, the first of its kind. It was erected in 1896 and renovated in 1958. Park land was also the site of the "Battle of Crampton's Gap," (part of the Battle of South Mountain) fought just before the Battle of Antietam.
