There is an enormous iron cannon that stands in the historic part of Ghent. It is called Dulle Griet (Mad Meg, evil woman) after a legendary mad woman in Flemish folklore. Another nickname for the cannon is the "Big Red Devil" due to its size and color. The cannon was built between 1430 and 1450.
There is differing information on the internet as to whether the cannon was ever used. Some sources claim it was a dud and never fired. Others said it was used in defense of the city. The cannon weighs more than 26,000 lbs. The barrel is more than 16 feet long and has a 25-inch opening. The granite stone balls that the cannon fired weigh approximately 730 lbs. The Big Red Devil is one of the largest surviving medieval cannons in the world.
Rubbish bin
Historically, the cannon was used as a rubbish bin or sleeping place for drunkards. The barrel was permanently closed a few years ago to put an end to this. This obviously occurred after I took this picture.
