Icy Strait Point

July 2018 -- Icy Strait Point is a cruise destination in Hoonah, Alaska. It is privately owned and operated by Alaskan natives. It was our first stop on our 2018 Alaska cruise.

I bought the souvenir picture.

Hoonah is a largely Tlingit (native) community. The town is 30 miles west of Juneau, across the Alaskan Inside Passage. It is an island that is only accessibly by boat or plane.  As of the 2020 census, the population of Hoonah was a whopping 931. It is the largest Tlingit community in Alaska and the 5th largest island in the US.

Welcome to Hoonah, Alaska

Hoonah has the largest Tlingit community in Alaska.

Hoonah has 8 churches.

The population of Hoonah is 931.

The cannery ceased operating in 1954.

Salmon was processed in the cannery.

The cannery is now a museum and giftshop.

Alaska is home to 7 species of Pacific salmon.

Crows were hanging around the restaurant.

There are many attractions in Hoonah. Niki and I chose whale watching. We saw many whales. and learned a lot about Hoonah during our cruise. Our boat guide was not native. After our boat trip we had time to look around Hoonah, see the cannery (museum and gift shop), and eat lunch (seafood, of course). The cruise ships are the lifeblood of Hoonah. Since we visited in 2018, another dock has been built to accommodate even larger cruise ships.
