Kruger National Park is home to one of the largest populations of free-ranging elephants in the world. According to AI, Kruger's elephant population has grown significantly in the 10 years since I visited, from roughly 17,000 to 28,000 pachyderms (thin skinned animals). While poaching is still a problem, it is nothing compared to rhino poaching. In fact, there is concern that the elephant population is getting too large at Kruger. Elephants have no predator and without human "culling" the population may continue to grow and alter the park's ecosystem.
