Assateague Island National Seashore

I've been to Assateague Island National Seashore many times. When I was a kid we went to the pony penning at nearby Chincoteague. I remember how much it rained that day. We got separated. I read all the Misty of Chincoteague books.

Established in 1965

Assateague is a 37-mile barrier island located off the Delmarva Peninsula. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland. The southern third is in Virginia. I've always preferred Assateague to Ocean City. It is relatively unspoiled beach. I used to take my niece there to play at the beach and see the ponies.

Of course, Assateague is famous for its feral ponies (actually small horses), whose exact origins are unknown. Shipwrecked, introduced by Spanish explorers, or released onto the island by farmers (to avoid taxes): pick your story. Regardless of their origins, the ponies are a fun addition to the island and sea shore.

The ponies in Maryland are managed separately from those in Virginia. There are fewer ponies in Maryland. They are on contraceptives to keep their population stable. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company owns the Virginia ponies and holds an annual auction (pony penning) to sell off many of the foals.

I took Sam to Assateague. She didn't like the beach, though I did get this good picture of her. I want to take Ty to the beach. I think he would like it.

Assateague is also a state park, est. 1956
