The Mighty Mac

October 2025 --  The Mackinac Bridge, the "Mighty Mac" connects Michigan's Lower Peninsula with its Upper Peninsula (The "UP"). The bridge spans the Mackinac Straits, the body of water that separates Lake Michigan from Lake Huron. It is a suspension bridge, with the world's 29th longest span (almost 5 miles).

For me it is natural to compare the Mackinac Bridge to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Both are long suspension bridges that separate the more populated parts of their state to their rural less populated peninsulas. The UP has only only 3% of  Michigan's population while the Eastern Shore is approximately 7% of Maryland's population. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is a much busier thoroughfare.

The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse is a deactivated lighthouse located at the northern tip of the lower peninsula. It is part of Fort Michilimackinac State Park in the village of Mackinaw City just east of the Mackinac Bridge. It was near to our hotel.
