September 22, 2025 -- I love cats and was happy to learn that Reykjavik is known for its free-roaming cats, including several celebrity (well-known) felines. They even have a cat café, which sadly was closed when I went.
There are several well-known cats
There are also a number of cat murals throughout the city. If I had had time, I would have searched them out.
The Yule Cat (Jólakötturinn) is a big nasty cat from Icelandic folklore. He lurks in the snowy countryside during the Christmas season and eats people who do not receive new clothes. Children who are not wearing the new clothes they got for Christmas are in trouble. There is a historical connection between the Yule Cat and Iceland's historic reliance on wool production. I suspect references to the Yule Cat are more light-hardy nowadays.
