River in Kerlingarfjöll

September 17, 2025 -- After leaving our accommodations near Egilsstaðir, we stumbled upon this humble canyon. I don't even know if it has a name.  While it shares the same river (Jökulsá á Dal), it wasn't as impressive as the canyon we were about to see (Stuðlagil Canyon). Lara smoked a cigarette while I explored the canyon and its surroundings.

Worth the stop

A little further down the road, we encountered this "sculpture" of a reindeer. We pulled off in the rest area. The surrounding scenery was bucolic: sheep grazing green fields.

Reindeer "sculpture"

Reindeer are not native to Iceland. They were introduced in the late 1700s. About 6-7000 reindeer are said to roam the eastern fjords. There is not commercial reindeer farming.
