October 21, 2022 -- I drove by Seneca Rocks many times when I worked for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (1984-1987). There was a lamb buying station, feedlot, and large sheep farm nearby. Many years later, I visited Seneca Rocks with Mom. I'd like to go back sometime to hike to the observation platform at the top (with Ty).
Seneca Rocks is best described as a large crag. It rises 900 feet above the North Fork River in the Monongahela National Forest and is one of the best known landmarks in West Virginia.. It is popular with rock climbers. Expert rock climbers. During WWII, the sheer cliffs were used as a training ground for high altitude combat.
Situated in front of Seneca Rocks is Harper's Country Store. Built in 1902, it is one of the oldest continuously operated businesses in West Virginia, the oldest general store. For many years, the store was owned and operated by long-time sheep farmer and industry leader Joe Harper (and his wife). Joe passed away a few years ago. His family still runs the store.
