New Zealand Wool

December 5, 2016 -- ElcoDirect Wool Buyers is one of the largest wool buyers in New Zealand. They are based in Cambridge on the North Island. We saw their "warehouse" (headquarters) while we were driving and decided to stop. We were lucky. Someone was available and willing to show us around.

Despite declining sheep numbers, New Zealand is still the third largest wool producing country in the world (behind China and Australia). While some fine wool is produced in New Zealand, most of their wool is coarse, 30 to 40 micron. This is because the majority of sheep are Romney.
