From prison to national monument

Kilmainham Gaol was the first place on our itinerary. It is a former prison near Dublin. It housed many Irish Revolutionaries, including leaders of the 1916 Easter Uprising. It executed many of them. Originally built in 1796, the prison was decommissioned in 1924 after Irish independence. The prison is now a museum of Irish Nationalism. During our tour we learned all about the prison's famous inhabitants, the executions, and the deplorable (mostly crowded) conditions. The prison gave us a good introduction to (recent) Irish history.
