Schoodic National Scenic Byway

September 13, 2024 -- Before reaching the Schoodic Peninsula (in Acadia National Park), Ty and I traveled the Schoodic National Scenic Byway through Hancock and Sullivan. There were scenic areas, pull-offs, and interpretive signs along the way. We stopped at a few. Ty always appreciated the opportunity to pee. I enjoyed learning more about the region. I learned the importance of granite to the area.

In the late 1880s, granite was as big an industry as fishing, with Maine granite being shipped all over.  A granite wharf was built on the Taunton River to load schooners destined for southern markets. Gordon's Wharf offered a panoramic view of Taunton Bay. The historic wharf is still used by lobster boats.

The Waukeag Station is a mock-up railroad exhibit along Taunton Bay. The exhibit is part of Kid's Quest to teach children and their parents about the region's history. Ty and I explored it. We didn't walk too far on the path, as time was of the essence. We only had two days to explore the area (Acadia National Park).
