More of France and Spain

In between sheep (and other livestock), there were other things we saw in France and Spain.  The drive to/from Madrid was very scenic. I did all the driving (with the help of a GPS), as I did in southern France. Mostly what I recall about driving was all the tolls, especially in France. One time, we couldn't get off a road because we didn't have the toll money. It's probably all electronic now. It was a day's drive from Madrid to Toulouse.

When I think of castles, I think of the British Isles, but there are plenty of castles on the continent. Carcassonne is a spectacular medieval castle in Southern France.  It is located in the city of the same name. It was built in the 12th century. The Castle of Carcassonne vies with Mont St. Michel for the most visited landmark in France. We didn't have near enough time to explore it.

The Millau Viaduct holds the world record for the tallest bridge. It is taller than the Empire State Building. The cable-stayed bridge is 8070 feet long and 1104 feet high. It only touches the Tarn Valley 9 times. The Millau Viaduct is considered to be a great architectural achievement. It was completed in 2004, and is a tourist attraction.

There is a monument dedicated to the Tour de France, the famous cycling race. We saw the monument when we stopped to get gas.

The yellow one is the winner.

It was a beautiful drive through the Pyrenees. David got nervous when I stopped on the side of the road to take a picture of a castle built into the side of a mountain.
