Almaty's Green Market

September 2003 -- During our month-long stay in Almaty (Kazakhstan) in 2003, the Green Market (or Bazaar) was one of our favorite places to go. It is a public market that was first started in 1875. It has always been an important trading point in Almaty. During our weekly visits, we enjoyed interacting with the vendors and seeing what they had to sell. Everything you could imagine could be purchased there. We would take pictures with our digital cameras, make prints at the office, and bring them back to the vendors the following week.  They seemed appreciative.

Koumis anyone?

Koumis is a traditional dairy product made from fermented mare's milk. They were selling it in the Green Market. We were offered koumis at many of our meals. I didn't care much for it. Herb liked it. After all, he was a beer-drinking Mennonite.
