A Jewel of an Island

August 2011 -- After having visited Prince Edward Island the year before (side trip after doing some FAMACHA© workshops in Nova Scotia), I decided I wanted to take Mom and Dad to Prince Edward Island. It was the last big trip I took them on. They were both 81 at the time. This makes it an extra special trip to remember. Both of them really enjoyed it. Mom still says its her favorite trip.

Prince Edward Island is one of Canada's eastern Maritime provinces. It is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  PEI is the smallest, but most densely populated province of Canada. Its capitol is Charlottetown.  The backbone of the economy is farming. PEI produces 25 percent of Canada's potatoes. Fisheries and tourism are the other big industries. The large island is known for its red sandy beaches.

To get to PEI (other than flying), you either take a ferry or drive across the Confederation Bridge (from New Brunswick). We did the latter. Confederation Bridge is 8 miles long. It is Canada's longest bridge and the longest across ice-covered water (in the world, as of our visit).

Our last big trip together.
