Merino Stud

November 30, 2016 -- We visited a Merino stud in the Northern Tablelands. One of the goals of my sabbatical was to learn more about precision sheep farming. Precision farming involves the use of electronic ear tags (RFID) and all the equipment that allow us to improve the efficiency of sheep production. Obviously, a stud farm is using precision techniques to make genetic improvements. In the case of the Merino breed, genetics are focused mostly on wool production. The Northern Tablelands is known for its production of "ultra fine" wool. Ultrafine wool is used in high end fashion (e.g., Italy).
