Ready, set, action . . . stop

September 16, 2025 -- A replica of a Viking Village was built in 2009 for a film project that was never completed. The fictional village is located on the Stokksnes Peninsula beneath Vestrahorn Mountain near Höfn in Northeast Iceland. It reflects how Viking-era structures might have looked. Several shows have since been filmed there, including the Witcher (season 4). The village is now a tourist attraction. We went.

Fictional Viking Village

As a tourist attraction, it was only so-so. It could have used more signage. You didn't really know what you were looking at. Not much to learn about Viking life. It also seemed like they needed to do more work on the village. Fix it up as if Vikings could have actually lived there. Maybe they don't have the funding to do. It is privately owned, by a farm. Regardless, it was a neat place to explore and take pictures. The location was breath-taking. We enjoyed the walk to/from the village. It was a beautiful day.

Being a Viking
Storming the village

Most of the materials used to build the village were driftwood from the beach or old telephone posts. In 2022, the Viking ship was added to the lake near the village. The ship is a replica of the Gokstad Ship, a longship used for exploration, trade, and even warfare. Hopefully, the will continue to develop the site.
