October 2, 2025 -- Ohiopyle State Park has been on my radar for several years. I finally went, with Ty. It was about 2.5 hours from Clear Spring, not a bad drive. A beautiful day, albeit a bit hot (low 80's). We got there late. I was surprised how many people were there. It's a popular place. But it wasn't crowded and there weren't many people on the hiking trails. We did portions of the Ferncliff and Meadow Run (Cucumber Falls) trails.
Ohiopyle Park Bridge (the one for foot traffic)
Ohiopyle State Park sits on 20,500 acres in the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The focal point of the park is 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River Gorge that runs through the park. The Ohiopyle Falls span the river and are located at the center of the park. The park is popular with white water enthusiasts. The name of the river is of Native American origin. It means "running in contrary directions."
Yep, that's the trail (Ferncliff)
One of the other popular waterfalls in the park is Cucumber Falls. Ty and I set out on the trail, but ran out of time and didn't reach the falls. The part of the trail that we did cover was very scenic. I'd like to go back next spring, when there will be more water flowing from the falls. I was told by fellow hikers that there wasn't much water in the falls. It's always best to visit waterfalls in the spring when abundant rain adds to the water flow.
Along Meadow Run Trail
The waters of Meadow Run have carved out a narrow channel that resembles a waterslide as it twists and turns downstream. These rock slides are a popular attraction in the park, especially during the summer. During my visit the water was low. Plus, I imagine it would be quite a bumpy ride apt to cause a lot of scratches and bruises. Probably better to navigate the water slides with a kayak or watch other people.
