September 18, 2025 -- The hike to the top of Hverfjall, a volcanic crater that looks like a black cone, is considered moderate due to its steepness. Blowing snow and cold made it even more challenging. I think that was the coldest I was in Iceland. But we did it and it was worth it because we were rewarded with incredible views.

Hverfjall Volcano and Crater
Hverfjall was formed in a volcanic eruption about 2,500 to 2,800 years ago. The distinctive circular shape was the result of a powerful explosion caused by magma interacting with groundwater.
